Guest Lecturer Richard Knight

Richard is an environmental scientist with degrees in zoology and a Master’s in restoration ecology, specialising in marine biology. He has a broad range of experience capturing and working with animals of all sorts, from native wildlife and agricultural livestock to prawns and crocodiles. In 2010 he trained as a commercial SCUBA diver, researching giant kelp in Tasmania. He soon moved back to a warmer climate and developed

a fascination with artificial reefs, then qualified as a SCUBA instructor and acquired skills in coral reef health assessment and restoration.

He ran a dive shop in Vanuatu, spent time with the Crown-of-Thorns Seastar control program and worked as a dive instructor in various parts of the Great Barrier Reef before starting with Coral Expeditions. He has worked full-time in various roles with the expedition team since 2019, moving to the guest lecturer position in 2023. He has recently started a company to develop a floating artificial reef facility with the potential to revolutionise reef restoration and seafood production.
